A couple of years ago, I was given a portfolio of Perry Bechtel's hand written manuscripts. These historical documents came from a very special tenor banjo student Perry had taught for many years, Marion Reinhart.
While Perry was mainly known as a plectrum banjoist and guitarist, he was also an accomplished professional musician and wrote very interesting tenor banjo charts.
I have approximately 150 of Perry's manuscripts. I've been charting them out by putting the tunes into my Finale music program. From that, I'm creating banjo fingering charts note by note. Sue Sangiacomo is computerizing the fingering charts and Perry's scores for publication. We anticipate doing approximately 20 tunes per book with the optimistic hope that the first will be ready in late October/early November.
Because Perry wrote these charts like a piano score, all the individual notes per chord are there. Because of this notation, I'm hoping to also create a matching "Perry Plays Plectrum" book in addition to the tenor book - although the plectrum fingering will be a bit more of a challenge since the single string runs are written for a tenor player.
Ultimately, once the books are completed, I plan to preserve the original scores and donate them to the Banjo Hall of Fame and Museum.
