Since
1985, the fifteen-piece San Francisco Starlight Orchestra
has been bringing back the ballroom magic of the "twenties
and early thirties" with a unique mix of jazz and dance music,
authentic to the last note. For audiences mostly interested
in jazz, such as those at festivals and concerts, the Orchestra
concentrates on what is now called the "hot dance" music
of the period, taken from such famous bands as those of Duke Ellington,
Don Redman, Bennie Moten, King Oliver, Paul Whiteman, Jean Goldkette,
Ben Pollack and Frank Trumbauer. When the SFSO plays
for dancers, an assortment of fox trots, rumbas, tangos, Charlestons
and waltzes are added to the play list.
These
SFSO recordings represent the finest "hot dance"
music being performed today.
