DIX BRUCE - BACKUP TRAX: EARLY JAZZ & HOT TUNES |
![]()
Mama Don't Allow is a fun tune you'll hear wherever trad jazz is played. .. In a typical performance, the tune features each band member individually. The whole band sings, "Mama don't allow no banjo playing in here ..." etc. and the banjo player does a call and response with the shout vocal. Then the banjo player takes a solo. The band members then sing about the next soloist, and so on. On the last chorus I asked some friends to sing so you could practice your call and response technique. Try the suggested licks (second staff below) and, of course, make up your own. Immediately before the vocal chorus, the band plays a break or stop chorus. Practice your stop time playing here over the "Mama" chord changes. Five choruses, one stop time chorus, one vocal call and response chorus. |
