In 1965,
while still a pilot for United Airlines,
Phil Wilking took his first tenor banjo lesson. He found existing
lead sheet pages hard to read. Phil began computerizing tunes on a laptop during
layovers between his flights. The end
result is this remarkable piece of work now being made available to everybody.
Phil
has long been known as a perfectionist. Now,
each tune in his collection benefits from
this demand for perfection.
Most tunes
contain the original verses which are
so hard to find. In many cases, Phil
included both the “politically incorrect” and “socially acceptable” versions of
the tune’s words. This was done in
order to preserve the history of the tune as well as its social relevance of the
time.
