A fun book of mainly popular, show and movie tunes through 1934-35; some from the fringes of the jazz repertoire; some "novelties" and a few relevant oddments from before 1920 and after 1935. Contains: quintessential pop and show tunes from the 20s era, entertaining and novelty tunes from 1900-1935, classic foxtrots, broadway and movie tunes from the early 30s, more.
Standards you'd expect to find; standards you'd be surprised to learn are from the 20s, with the verses and original chords; some "novelties"; and a few oddments from before 1920 and after 1935. Some pop tunes will be familiar mainly to Bix fans, from his Paul Whiteman days. Many tunes in this book are "novelties" by virtue of cutesy lyrics and turns of phrase, but our novelties go beyond that.
Many of the best-known "sing-along" standards are part of the Dixieland repertoire, hence are in Dixieland Fake Book Vol. 1. A few 20s tunes popular in the 30s and later (eg. Gershwin) are in 30s-40s Fake Book. The "hard-core" dixieland classics that are such an important part of 20s music are in Dixieland Fake Book Vol. 2.
The Lyrics: All the lyrics for each book are available by e-mail when you order.
The large print, 4-to-the-line chord format of the book prevents putting lyrics directly under the staves. Space permitting they are at the bottom of the page. Otherwise, there are separate lyrics sheets which are formatted to match the measures in the tunes for correct phrasing. NOTE: Lyric pages are available by e-mail only. NO paper copies are available.
